Dick Allen number retired, Mike Schmidt Honors Dick Allen at Phillies Slugger's Jersey

Dick Allen number retired, Mike Schmidt Honors Dick Allen at Phillies Slugger's Jersey.

Phillies managing partner and principal owner John Middleton oversaw the retirement of Dick Allen’s No. 15 on Thursday afternoon in a ceremony at Citizens Bank Park.

By doing so, Middleton admitted he was changing a long-standing club rule that a player must be inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in order to have his number retired.

It opens the door for 2008 World Series stars Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and possibly Cole Hamels to see their numbers placed on the walls above Ashburn Alley in the future.

“Specifically, I’m changing the policy,” agreed Middleton when asked after the ceremony. “We’ll protect the legacy of the jerseys retired. Retiring numbers of players who are good and popular doesn’t protect the legacy, but I think we can say you are Hall of Fame worthy, and you can say that about Dick. I just don’t think saying someone wasn’t voted in by writers in California and Missouri should keep us from honoring them. This is a Philadelphia honor.”

Middleton said the policy was one the Phillies espoused but didn’t always follow. Richie Ashburn’s No. 1 was retired decades before he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton had their numbers retired before their inductions – though they were both considered slam dunks.

Middleton said he received input from Schmidt and Carlton before deciding to retire Allen’s number. Schmidt spoke at the ceremony.
